Pierre Man Named Finalist for Delta Waterfowl Volunteer of the Year

by Delta Waterfowl

Like most members of Delta Waterfowl, Willie Gloe enjoys time spent in a duck blind or just being outdoors-creating memories that will last a lifetime. He thrills at the cupped wings of incoming birds and the camaraderie of hunting with good friends.

The Pierre, South Dakota, outdoorsman doesn’t stop at simply savoring the hunt. For Gloe, waterfowl hunting is an obsession — a year-round passion he is driven to share with others. He wants to give back and create awareness within the local community. His outstanding dedication as a volunteer has earned Gloe a distinct honor: He’s one of seven national finalists for the prestigious Delta Waterfowl Volunteer of the Year Award.

Gloe, chairman of the Fowled Up Chapter based in Pierre, has led a committed local group of volunteers who consistently hold one of the most highly attended and charitable events in South Dakota.  Gloe’s enthusiasm for all things fowl resonates within his community. Last year, he personally sold more than 100 tickets. Under Gloe’s leadership, the chapter has used banquet funds to hold mentored hunts, install Hen Houses, sponsor high school shooting teams, provide student scholarships and participate in the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Youth Expo.

“Gloe’s pride for big fundraising results and providing local impact is priceless,” said Scott Terning, Senior Regional Director for Delta Waterfowl. “Yet even with the accomplishments that he has helped the committee achieve, Willie remains incredibly humble and wants everyone to share in the chapter’s local accomplishments. Delta is extremely fortunate to have him and other chapter volunteers involved at the local level.”

With 3800 devoted volunteers in the United States and Canada, Delta Waterfowl and communities benefit from the efforts of these volunteers.  While Delta, which bills itself as The Duck Hunters Organization, celebrates the contributions of every volunteer, only a handful of people are nominated for Volunteer of the Year.
